T. G Hawkes ABP Cut Glass Delft Diamond 12 Wine Decanter Sterling Silver Stopper

  

Listed is a fine representative of fine American cut glass , produced at a time when European glass houses were considered the international leaders in cut glass production. Hawkes Company , based out of Corning, NY shattered that reputation by being awarded the 1889 Paris Exposition grand prizes for two (2) of its' blown cut glass patterns.

International acclaim followed - dispelling the notion of European superiority. Hawkes was the premier name in American Brilliant Glass and internationally recognized. 1 903 Hawkes teamed with. Considered to be the world's most famous glass houses today.

Omponents used in the glass were needed and used in that war effort. The ABP did not recover; but continues a distinguished reputation and high desirability for its pieces. It rivals the top cut glass houses of Europe.

"HAWKES" - D elft Diamond pattern hand cut blown glass wine decanter with an impressive heavily clad. This is a rare piece produced by the T. It measures 12 " inches in height and measures 5-1/2 " inches in diameter at its widest point. Rling clad onion domed stopper. But suits the decanter well.

The underside of the decanter is acid etched with an early marking : a fleur de lis with a bird/hawk on either side , all encased inside a trefoil , underneath which is etched " HAWKES ". All component pieces of this mark are very distinct, but the etching is light. Was unable to snap a good image. Pix # 12 , which is vague, provides some semblance of what it looks like.

The sterling silver stopper is marked " STERLING " just above where the base of the sterling onion dome meets the glass. Also hand- scratched is the number " 13 " in the glass area of the stopper.
