The primary motif on the larger pieces, such as a punch bowl, is not even found on some pieces, while the blazed, triple-leaf clusters on some examples, such as this decanter, is not found on others. The 4- part design is laid in two major motifs: hobstars wreathed with blazed single leaves as well as 2 and 3 blazed leaf clusters. The 3-leaf clusters are shared with the secondary major motif of deep, opposing miters with a fan at the top and a single, perfectly vertical blazed leaf at the bottom.
The base is fully cut in a very fine 16 point hobstar. The double gooseneck is entirely cut in reversing flutes with the neck rings in lapidary. Looking through the length of the neck, however, the optics make it seem cut in hollow diamond!
As mentioned, the decanter is cut in 4-part, and the stopper is cut in a two part version of the exact pattern. Very often stoppers are described as'cut in pattern' when they merely have a motif or two found in the pattern; not so on this beauty! The stopper also has some terrific optics to enjoy. Swan wrote of a few pieces in this pattern in high words of praise for quality in cutting, pattern, and blanks.
