Stunning ovoid shaped decanter manufactured and cut by Val St. 1905 and is shown exactly in the ACGA catalog reprint "Cristalleries du Val Saint-Lambert" on p. 75 under the heading'SPIRITBOTTLES TAILLES. The pattern name is'Thomas. While the color is generally referred to as'cranberry,' to my eye'Garnet' is much closer to the actual hue of the glass, being richer and more saturated than the somewhat brighter and redder red of cranberry.

The blank is of superior metal and perfectly cased. In the'Forward' of the ACGA catalog, there is an interesting discussion on the high quality of VSL cased blanks and the'enormous technical skill' that was required to produce these. It is noted that the USA imported a significant amount of VSL blanks. VSL blanks and technical skills in cased glass production and in cutting equal, and often surpass, those of some American cutting houses.

VSL cut to clear wares have long been recognized as co-equal with their American cousins. The decanter stands a little over 10 tall with the pattern cut stopper which is hollow with an air trap drawn to an exceedingly fine point just below the garnet/cut to clear ball. The lower portion of the stopper is fluted and notched; this treatment matches the upper portion of the decanter below the spout which is also clear cut, fluted and notched.

The body is ovoid, with a base 3 1/2" long and 2 1/2" wide. There is a 24 point radiant star cut on the bottom. The handle is triple cut in hollow diamond and although of clear glass, the garnet color of the body bleeds into the clear glass in such a way that the lower portion of the handle may appear completely garnet and the center section of hollow diamond appears cut to clear in lighter shades. Quite a lovely optical illusion. Collections are always enhanced by colored cut-to-clear examples among the colorless examples of Brilliant Cut Glass.
