Silver Mounted German Cut & Ground Glass Claret Decanter- Wolf &Knell c. 1895
This gorgeous German claret jug has panel cut sides that are further decorated with wheel cut scrolls and tendrils. The piece is also fitted with a Hanau silver base and band. The silver fittings are is exquisitely fret cut and repoussed with swags, bellflowers, acanthus leaves and busts of men that look a lot like Beethoven. The piece is octagonal in form and has a loop handle and facetted stopper. The silver on this piece is. I think this piece dates to c. It is a total of 12" tall and has a diameter of 3". The condition of the piece is great but their is some interior etching (or residue) that I haven't tried to get out (see final photo). Given the wheel cutting and everything else that is going on with this piece I don't find that this issue is particularly distracting.
