Magnificent pr Mid19th Century American Decanters Pittsburgh Dorflinger Sandwich. The cutting and engraving is truely superb, and the age and condition is astounding! This pair are very early, can could have been an early Dorflinger cut, a later Pittsburgh Bakewell and Pears cut, or could have been cut by Sandwish.
You can see the mold marks on the base, as well as the deep polished pontil. THESE ARE 10 1/2" TALL AND 4" WIDE AT THE BROADEST SECTION These are very clear, with the slight grayish cast you expect from early Flint glass, and are completely CLEAN ON THE INTERIORS! One of the hollow teardrop stoppers has been broken many many years ago, and has an OLD repair of a peg inserted into the peg and top, and cemented in place. The other decanter has a slight shallow flake on the inner rim. This could be polished with little danger to the decanter, or to the integrity of the piece. Each stopper is hollow, a typical American technique seldom employed by Europeans at any time, and each is engraved with a fancy Victorian Script "S".
These are lovely enough to have graced even the White House, and are really museum quality! The techiniques and the cutting are of the very best quality, and that is what leads me to Dorflinger, Pittsburgh and Sandwish. Each of these early companies quickly became renowned for excellence in quality and craftsmanship. I will be offering another early cut decanter as well tonight, and I also have a superb PITTSBURG CIRCA 1820 DECANTER OFFERED AS WELL. IF YOU LOVE EARLY GLASS, PLEASE CHECK MY OTHER AUCTIONS!
