A RARE decanter in an unknown pattern from the brilliant designers at J. In the last 20 years, I have seen only two other pieces in this pattern -- a water goblet and a decanter. Standing 7 3/4" tall, and 5 1/2" wide across the center, the carafe is in excellent condition with no cloudiness, residue or other issues.
Some slight base wear, and a pinpoint prick or two on some miter edges. This is a 4-repeat pattern which is quite a cutting accomplishment on a carafe. The entire shoulder area is defined by the four pairs of diverging vesica tusks that crown each of the four, 24 point hobstars.
Five blade fans spring from the vertex between the tusks at the top and the hobstars at the bottom. Note the depth of cutting in the pictures. The tusks are just beautifully done with that fascinating play of light they create. The gorgeous, 24 point hobstars are set in shield-shape fields filled with a background of silver diamond.
The square base created by the 4-part pattern is trimmed into a circle in which floats a very fine 16 point hobstar. This'circle in a square' accented by fans at the corner is an unusual feature. I can find only one sales comp.
This elegant design is very scarce, even rising to'rare' which is a term I use VERY sparingly.
