Georgian cut and engraved taper decanter, clipped disk stopper

  

This is what we believe to be a Georgian, scale-cut glass, engraved taper decanter dating from the end of the 18th century, c1780. The decanter is in excellent condition for its age.

This means, of course, that it shows the age related wear and tear to the base commensurate with some 200+ years of use. The decanter is club-shaped and is decorated with fishscale cutting down to the shoulders from the pouring lip. The body of the decanter is engraved with swags of stylised leaves and two sets of initials FCJ? The base is plain save for a polished out pontil mark and measures 10.2 cm (4.1 inches) in diameter. The decanter is 23.5 cm (9.4 inches) in height without the stopper and 29 cm (11.6 inches) in height with the stopper inserted. The stopper is of clipped disk form, and is possibly the original. It is a very good fit and is of the same colour and metal. There is the normal, very minor wear to the peg and facets of the stopper as is to be expected of an item of this age. There are no major chips, cracks, significant scratches or any obvious evidence of restoration. There are a couple of tiny inclusions in the metal of the decanter and some light water staining to the bottom.
