Victorian Claret Jug or Decanter. 32 oz Capacity (4 cups). Beautiful mold blown and cut bulbous shaped Ewer or Captain's Decanter, probably from Europe. Topped with a Silver Plate (possibly unmarked sterling) rim with a. Standing Lion with Shield Finial.
Shield is intended for Monogram but is blank so can still be personalized. Really well done, the cut glass is cut with a diamond grid, slanted bevels and star cut base.
There are vertical cut pointed ovals forming the lower border at the base of the body. Most of the silver mounted decanters I see have silver handles as well. This has an applied glass handle.
The silver rim and finial cleaned "like" silver as there is absolutely no signs of pitting. The only mark I found is under the top of the lid and is either a 91 or 61, no other markings. The shape and weight at 3 pounds definitely indicates older.
The repousse pattern features cherubs with musical instruments and playing with ribbons in a jump-rope like play. 11 1/4" Tall x 3 1/4" Dia (at neck) x 5 1/4 Dia Base.
