Antique William IV Period Panel Cut Glass Decanter with Mushroom Stopper
A William IV period panel cut decanter dating about 1835. It has a club shaped body which has been all over panel cut. There are three neck rings and a pouring lip and the base has had the pontil scar polished out. The glass has a steely-grey tint which is quite attractive. The stopper is a period replacement of cut mushroom form and a lighter tone in colour.
During this period decanters were essential equipment for wine drinking as the wine needed to be filtered before serving. This was done using a wine filter into a decanter such as this. General age related wear with scuffs and scratches around the body about in line with period for a well used example. Base has lots of wear.
Some water marking to interior base. Fritting along the cut edges.
