This unlatches the top bar which can then be hinged upwards with the handle remaining in place. The lock is marked for Hobbs & Co of London and there are further initials impressed to the end of the locking bar. The opposite end of the lock bar is stamped'patent'. The bottles are typical late Victorian hobnail cut style in lead glass with lapidary cut stoppers. They appear to be the originals and would be ok to use.
The overall construction is quite sturdy and it was clearly a good quality item of stylish form. A good example, minor wear and small knocks to the wood. Silver plate is good to handle, lock bar and verticals, it is a bit worn to the base decorative fittings.
Lock working fine, hinge nice and tight. Decanters are much better than average, some slight nibbles and the odd chip including one to the underside of a rim and another to a stopper peg.All stoppers of excellent fit and sealing well. Some watermarking to the base of two decanters. Length: 38.5 cm (15 1/8 inch). Height: 30 cm (11 3/4 inch) including handle. Weight: 5760 grams (before packing).
