American Brilliant Cut Glass J. Hoare Whiskey Decanter Unique & Breathtaking

  

Antique ABP Cut Glass Whiskey Decanter by J. In my many years (35+) of glass collecting I have never personally seen the equal of this magnificent J. A somewhat similar whiskey decanter is shown in The Complete Cut & Engraved Glass of Corning by Farrar & Spillman, Illustration 81 at p. 41 labeled "Oval Whiskey Jug 9132-429" but it is not as delicately and profusely engraved as mine offered here. After much research in my reference books I believe the pattern is "Monarch" (or similar), the details being best shown in photos #2 and #3 close-ups.

The decanter is acid etched with the J. 1853 CORNING stamp of authenticity on the bottom as shown in photo #8. Hoare & Company was the first of Corning's many cutting companies and one of the longest lived.

The dimensions are: 9" high by 6 1/4" wide by 2 3/8 deep and holds 24 oz. It is heavy for its size, weighing approximately 3.5lbs. Please refer to the photos of this decanter for the best description. The condition is excellent for its age (over 100 years) with four items of note: 1 The first inch of the neck below the spout is slightly cloudy from contact with a stopper, which can be seen in photo #9; 2 where the upper half of the handle joins the top of the neck, there appears to be an old stress crack which is observable in photo #10, but the handle neck joint is solid, the stress crack does not appear to have travelled further, and the crack is barely noticeable when viewing the decanter as a whole; 3 there is a very small "fleabite" on one of the saw-tooth ridges of the neck. It is not a crack, but a small chip on one of the very small teeth, so small I couldn't photo it; 4 the bottom of the decanter has small, minor scratches from resting on surfaces (not uncommon for a centenarian) and can be seen in photos #7 & #8.

None of the above disclosed items detracts markedly from the overall beauty, quality and superb workmanship of this beautiful decanter. Thank you for looking at this magnificent J.
