Antique Barbour Sterling Silver & Cut Glass Tantalus, Silver Overlay Stoppers

  

Welcome to Antiques & Moore! This listing is for a stunning 2-bottle Tantalus with engraved silver overlay stoppers mounted in a solid Sterling Silver stand made by the Barbour Silver Co.

The bottles are heavy hand cut crystal believed to have been made by Hawkes with Sterling Silver collars and cut crystal stoppers overlaid with Sterling Silver. The decanters are cut with an elongated convex shaped panel cut neck above the wide rounded panel cut lower body. The impressive solid Sterling Silver stand is decorated with a wide pierced gallery for each decanter with a fancy handle above a tall engraved stem.

Was established in 1892 and was one of the original silver companies that formed the International Silver Co. Bottles measure 8" high (to top of collar) and have a 5 1/2" overall width.

Stand measures 14 3/4" high (to top of handle), 13 3/4" wide and 6 1/8 deep. Sterling Silver stand weighs 1222 grams. Combined weight of stand with both decanters and stoppers is around 10 pounds. The glass bottles are well cut and have no notable chips or cracks although there is faint residue on the bottom of each.

We have not tried to wash them or remove this and when filled, the cloudiness will not be noticed. There are some tiny no-harm nicks on a couple of the edges of the vertical cut panels where the decanters are inserted into the stand that are not readily noticed and do not detract at all from the beauty of this impressive set. Both stoppers have a chip on the base that fits into the neck of the decanters (see photos). You will notice that the silver overlay decoration is different on the top of each stopper.

One has a crown shaped dome finial on top and the other is smooth. They may have been made this way but there is a possibility that the crown on one was damaged and the silver was restored. This impressive Tantalus is absolutely stunning and will soon become one of your favorite entertaining accessories!
